1abelElwood · Alternatives
Brands like Elwood, compared one hoodie at a time.
If you like Elwood for a washed, roomy hoodie with a vintage look, start with the detail you want to change: a stated fabric weight, the cut, the branding, where it is made, or what you pay in your own currency. A heavier fleece is not automatically the right one for you. Use the named models and their original sources below, then compare garment measurements.
1ABEL is a Melbourne label: one 22-piece system, released one capsule at a time. Capsule 3 opens Nov 11, 2027, and until then the shop is waitlist-only.

— In short
This guide uses one reference: the Elwood Core Hoodie in Vintage Black. Its official US page lists brushed French terry in 100% organic cotton, a vintage wash and a standard fit with dropped shoulders that it says has a slightly oversized silhouette, at $90 USD. The page does not publish a fabric weight figure. The four alternatives are the Fear of God Essentials 90s Hoodie, the Los Angeles Apparel HF09 Heavy Fleece Hoodie, the Madhappy Classics Fleece Hoodie and the 1ABEL Hoodie. Each row names one product, because fabric and fit change from model to model inside every brand.
Published by 1ABEL. We sell one of these alternatives; this is a comparison of published specifications, not an independent wear test. Sources and listed prices were checked on 18 October 2026. Prices stay in the currency each official page lists, exclude delivery and possible taxes, and are not converted or ranked. Our own details are catalog specifications. 1ABEL is currently waitlist-only until Capsule 3 opens on 11.11.2027.
The short version
Reference model, Elwood Core Hoodie in Vintage Black
The US page lists brushed French terry in 100% organic cotton, 2x1 rib in 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex, a vintage wash, a double-layer hood, a front kangaroo pocket, coverstitch seam detail and a cinched hem. It describes a standard fit with dropped shoulders, and its size notes say the fit has a slightly oversized silhouette. Sizes run XS to XXL at $90 USD, with no struck-through price. Elwood also lists a Core Hoodie 3 Pack at $240 USD, shown as a $30 saving. The page does not publish a fabric weight or a country of manufacture.
Fear of God Essentials 90s Hoodie in Vintage Black
The US page lists 80% cotton and 20% polyester core fleece at 380GSM, a 90s relaxed fit with dropped shoulders that taper into neoprene cuffs, a kangaroo pocket, woven patches with glossy printed lettering on the front and an Essentials label on the hood. Origin is given as imported. It is listed at $175 USD in sizes XS to XXXL, and the page marks all sales of this item as final.
Los Angeles Apparel HF09 Heavy Fleece Hoodie (Garment Dye) in Vintage Black: the US page lists 14oz heavyweight fleece, a loose fit, a kangaroo pocket and ribbed cuffs and hem, and says it is knitted, cut, sewn and dyed in Los Angeles, California. It is listed at $78 USD in sizes XS to 3XL. The product text does not state the fibre content, so we have not assigned one.
Madhappy Classics Fleece Hoodie in Tar
The US page lists 100% cotton heavyweight fleece, a relaxed unisex fit, an embroidered Madhappy logo, a hand stitch at the hood, ribbed cuffs and hem, and Made in Los Angeles. It is listed at $175 USD in sizes XXS to XXL. The page does not publish a fabric weight figure.
1ABEL Hoodie
Our catalog lists 550 gsm cotton fleece, Portugal manufacture and sizes XS, S, M, L, XL at $195 USD. Triple-stitched paneling for structure, elongated drawcord with metal aglets, kangaroo pocket with hidden internal pocket. Dropped shoulder for relaxed fit. These are our own declared specifications. They do not establish that it fits or wears like the Elwood Core Hoodie, the catalog record describes no vintage wash, and you cannot buy it today: it is open for waitlist interest only.
Read the weights with their units. Essentials publishes 380GSM, Los Angeles Apparel publishes 14oz and our catalog lists 550 GSM. Elwood publishes no figure, and Madhappy uses the word heavyweight without a number on the page checked. Compare figures only where the unit matches. Weight describes fabric mass per area. It does not tell you how a hoodie will fit, feel or last.
Compare fit with measurements. Elwood lists a Medium at a 26 1/2 inch length and a 52 1/2 inch chest. Los Angeles Apparel lists a Medium at 27 7/8 inches body length and 23 1/2 inches chest width, and Madhappy lists 28.5 and 24 for the same size. Those chest figures are not measured the same way, so lay a hoodie you already like flat, note chest width, body length and sleeve length, and check how each chart measures before you pick a size. "Slightly oversized" at Elwood, "90s relaxed" at Essentials, "loose" at Los Angeles Apparel and "relaxed unisex" at Madhappy are four different patterns.
If the faded look is why you buy Elwood, check the dye method rather than the colour name. Elwood's FAQ says its garments go through a dyeing process for a vintage look and often use garment-washed fabrics designed to fade over time. Of the alternatives, only the Los Angeles Apparel listing describes one: it is garment dyed after sewing, and Vintage Black is among the colours it lists as pigment dyed, with a note that colour can transfer when wet. Essentials uses Vintage Black as a colour name without describing a wash, and the Madhappy page and our catalog describe none.
