This climate column is practical 1abel styling guidance, not a temperature rating. Wind, humidity, activity, base layers, fibre, knit, brushing and construction can change how a hoodie feels.

What GSM tells you

GSM expresses fabric mass in grams per square metre. It is useful for comparing disclosed fabric weights, but it is not a complete warmth, quality or fit score. Two hoodies at different weights can also differ in fibre mix, knit, surface finish, pattern and construction.

Four official examples, not universal rules

The Stanley/Stella Chaser is listed at 280 GSM with a relaxed fit and brushed 80% organic-cotton, 20% recycled-polyester fabric. The Cruiser 2.0 is listed at 350 GSM with a medium fit and the same stated fibre proportions in a brushed fabric. Those examples change weight and fit together, so they cannot isolate GSM as the only variable.

The Cooper Dry is listed at 400 GSM, oversized and made from 100% organic-cotton French terry with a dry handfeel. The current 1abel hoodie record lists 550 GSM. Together, these product records demonstrate variation in weight, fibre, finish and cut; they do not establish a universal climate band.

How to approach 280 GSM

Use 280 GSM as a lighter comparison point, then inspect whether the fabric is brushed, what fibres are listed, how the hood and rib are built, and how much room the pattern gives your base layer. Choose it for your actual indoor and outdoor routine.

How to approach 350 GSM

At 350 GSM, ask the same questions. The official Cruiser example is brushed and medium fit, but another hoodie at this weight could be cut or finished differently. Compare the complete product record rather than transferring one example's feel to the category.

How to approach 450+ GSM

In the 450+ range, fabric mass may be visually and physically more noticeable, yet fibre, knit, brushing and construction still shape drape and layering. Check shoulder intent, sleeve movement, hem behavior and whether the planned base layer fits comfortably. Do not choose a size from GSM alone.

A four-part buying check

  1. Confirm the disclosed GSM and fibre percentages.
  2. Identify knit and finish, including whether the face or interior is brushed.
  3. Read the intended fit and test it with your layers.
  4. Use climate guidance as a starting point, then account for conditions and activity.

If fit is your main question, move to the heavyweight hoodie five-check guide; it has a different intent from this weight comparison.
