Brands like J.Crew, compared one T-shirt at a time.

If you like J.Crew for a soft, plain cotton tee, start with the detail you want to change: a published fabric weight, a choice of body lengths, where the tee is made, or the shape through the chest and shoulder. The named tees below are not identical replacements. Use the published specifications and original sources to shortlist, then compare garment measurements before you buy.

1abel is a Melbourne label: one 22-piece system, one release a year. Capsule 3 opens Nov 11, 2026, and until then the shop is waitlist-only.

This guide uses one reference: the J.Crew Broken-in T-shirt for men in Black. Its official US page lists 100% cotton, short sleeves, a garment that is dyed twice and specially washed, and Classic, Slim and Tall fits, at $36.50 USD. It does not publish a fabric weight. The four alternatives are the Buck Mason Toughknit Classic Tee, the Everlane Midweight Tee, Asket The T-Shirt and the 1ABEL Tee. Each row names one product, because fabric and fit change from model to model inside every brand.

Published by 1abel. We sell one of these alternatives; this is a comparison of published specifications, not an independent wear test. Sources and listed prices were checked on 13 October 2026. Prices keep their original currencies, exclude delivery and possible taxes, and are not converted or ranked. Our own details are declared catalog specifications. 1ABEL is currently waitlist-only until Capsule 3 opens on 11.11.2026.

The short version

  1. Reference model, J.Crew Broken-in T-shirt in Black

The US page lists 100% cotton, short sleeves and machine wash, and says the tee is garment-dyed twice and specially washed for softness and lived-in colour. J.Crew says it introduced the style in 2004. The page offers Classic, Slim and Tall fits, states "Imported" without naming a country, and publishes no GSM or ounce weight.

  2. J.Crew pricing on the checked listing

The US site showed $36.50 USD with a "Friends & Family: 30% off" message beside it and no struck-through price. We have recorded the displayed price and not applied the promotion. The same product shown to a visitor in Australia displayed AUD 69 with duties and taxes included, so check the price for your own region.

  3. Buck Mason Toughknit Classic Tee in White

The page lists a midweight 200 GSM carded, ringspun cotton grown in the USA, with the fabric line reading 100% cotton. It describes a classic fit crewneck with a straight hemline, a bound neck and a screen-printed label, double-washed, and says it is developed, milled and sewn at BM Knitting Mills in Mohnton, PA. Listed at $62 USD.

  4. Everlane Midweight Tee in White

The listing describes a crew neck tee in a heavier fabric made from 100% certified organic cotton, in sizes XS to XXL. It does not publish a GSM or ounce weight. On the check date the US listing showed a $19 USD sale price beside a $48 USD regular price. Sale prices move, so read the current listing.

  5. Asket The T-Shirt in White

The US page lists 100% organic long staple cotton in a compact 180gsm jersey that Asket calls midweight. The cut is described as classic and straight, with Short, Regular and Long lengths across sizes XS to XXL. The page says it is milled, cut and sewn in Portugal and lists 65 USD. J.Crew handles length with a separate Tall fit; Asket does it inside every size.

  6. 1ABEL Tee

Our catalog lists 220 gsm ringspun cotton, garment-dyed, Portugal manufacture and sizes XS, S, M, L, XL at $75 USD. Boxy through the chest with a dropped shoulder. Ribbed crew neck and side-seamed construction. These are our own declared specifications. They do not establish that it fits or feels like the J.Crew tee, and you cannot buy it today: it is open for waitlist interest only.

  7. Read the weights as a spread, not a score. Three listings publish a figure: 180gsm (Asket), 200 GSM (Buck Mason) and 220 GSM (1ABEL). J.Crew and Everlane publish none on the pages we read. Weight describes fabric mass per area. It does not tell you how a T-shirt will fit, feel or last.

  8. Compare fit with measurements, then the final delivered cost. Lay a T-shirt you already like flat and note chest width, shoulder width, body length and sleeve length. "Classic" at J.Crew, "classic fit" at Buck Mason and "boxy" in our catalog are three different patterns. Delivery, tax, promotions and return terms change what you pay, so these prices are not placed in an order.

Questions people ask

What brands are similar to J.Crew?

This guide compares four: Buck Mason, Everlane, Asket and 1ABEL. The overlap is partial. All five named T-shirts are plain short-sleeve cotton tees, but the published fabric weight, cut, place of manufacture and listed price differ from one model to the next. Start with the detail you want to change and read the matching row.

What stores are like J.Crew?

Buck Mason, Everlane and Asket each sell plain cotton tees through their own online stores, and every link here goes to the official product page we read. 1ABEL also sells through its own site, but it is waitlist-only right now, so there is nothing to order yet. Check each store for delivery to your country.

Are J.Crew clothes high quality?

This guide does not give a quality verdict, and we have not wear-tested any of these tees. What the Broken-in T-shirt page states is 100% cotton, a garment that is dyed twice and specially washed, and "Imported" with no country named. It publishes no fabric weight. That covers one model on 13 October 2026, not the whole range.

What is the J.Crew Broken-in T-shirt made of?

The US page for the men's Broken-in T-shirt in Black lists 100% cotton. It says the tee is garment-dyed twice and specially washed for softness. It does not publish a GSM or ounce figure, so it cannot be compared by weight with the tees here that do. If you need a number, ask J.Crew directly.

How much does the J.Crew Broken-in T-shirt cost?

On 13 October 2026 the US site listed the Black colour at $36.50 USD and displayed a "Friends & Family: 30% off" message beside it. The Australian version of the same page showed AUD 69 with duties and taxes included. The price changes with region and promotion, so check the current listing for your location.

What are some stores similar to Madewell for men?

We did not read a Madewell product page for this guide, so we cannot compare a Madewell tee here. The J.Crew US site links to Madewell in the brands section of its footer. If you are starting from a plain Madewell men's tee, the same checks apply to the four tees above: fabric, any published weight, fit and measurements.

Is there a J.Crew dupe?

These are distinct products from different brands. A shared 100% cotton label or a similar classic shape does not establish matching measurements, feel or wear. Decide which detail you want to keep or change, such as the washed finish or the Tall length option, then inspect the exact garment.

How does the 1ABEL Tee compare with the J.Crew Broken-in T-shirt?

On published specifications only: our catalog lists 220 gsm ringspun cotton, garment-dyed at $75 USD, and the J.Crew page lists 100% cotton at $36.50 USD with no fabric weight. Neither listing shows how a T-shirt fits or lasts. The 1ABEL Tee is waitlist-only until Capsule 3 opens on 11.11.2026; joining the waitlist does not place an order.
