1abelMarine Layer · Alternatives

Brands like Marine Layer, compared one T-shirt at a time.

If you like Marine Layer for a soft, light T-shirt, start with the detail you want to keep or change: the cotton and modal blend, a stated fabric weight, the cut, where it is made, or what you pay in your own currency. A blend and an all-cotton jersey are different fabrics, and softness is not something a product page can measure for you. Use the named models and their original sources below, then compare garment measurements.

1ABEL is a Melbourne label: one 22-piece system, released one capsule at a time. Capsule 3 opens Nov 11, 2027, and until then the shop is waitlist-only.

— In short

This guide uses one reference: the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee in Pure White. Its official US page lists 50% Supima cotton and 50% micromodal, says the modal comes from recycled beech wood, calls the tee lightweight and says it is made in the USA, at a $54 USD regular price. The page does not publish a fabric weight figure. The four alternatives are the Faherty Sunwashed Regenerative Tee, the Outerknown Sojourn Tee, Taylor Stitch The Organic Cotton Tee and the 1ABEL Tee. All four list cotton with no modal, so none of them is the same fabric as the reference. Each row names one product, because fabric and fit change from model to model inside every brand.

Published by 1ABEL. We sell one of these alternatives; this is a comparison of published specifications, not an independent wear test. Sources and listed prices were checked on 18 October 2026. Prices stay in the currency each official page lists, exclude delivery and possible taxes, and are not converted or ranked. Our own details are catalog specifications. 1ABEL is currently waitlist-only until Capsule 3 opens on 11.11.2027.

The short version

  1. Reference model, Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee in Pure White

The US page lists 50% Supima cotton and 50% micromodal and says the modal comes from recycled beech wood. It calls the tee lightweight and pre-washed for softness, lists a self collar band and self binding hems, and says it shrinks about 1 inch if you put it in the dryer. It is made in the USA, and the page calls it the tee that started the company in 2009. Sizes run Small to 2XL, including two in-between sizes, Marge and Larger. The regular price shown was $54 USD, with 20% off any three tees displayed on the day we checked. The page names no fit and publishes no fabric weight figure.

  2. Faherty Sunwashed Regenerative Tee in White

The US page lists 100% regenerative organic cotton with a sunwashed finish and calls it a mid-weight tee. It describes a relaxed fit with a listed length of 28½ inches, a printed main label inside the back neck and a woven Sun & Waves label at the wearer's left hem. Sizes run XS to XXL at $68 USD, with no struck-through price; an online offer of 20% off two or more select Sunwashed tees was shown on the day we checked. The page does not publish a fabric weight figure or say where the tee is made.

  3. Outerknown Sojourn Tee in Salt

The US page lists 100% Regenerative Organic Certified cotton, which the description names as Pima cotton, and describes the tee as light and breathable. It lists a Classic Fit with a 28-inch length on size M, rib trim at the neck and sleeves, and a neckline it says is slightly more relaxed than a classic crew. It is made in Miraflores, Lima, Peru, in sizes XS to XXXL at $58 USD. The page does not publish a fabric weight figure. Its description also mentions a chest pocket, while Outerknown sells a separate Sojourn Pocket Tee, so check the photos of the colour you want.

  4. Taylor Stitch The Organic Cotton Tee in Vintage White

The US page lists 5-oz. 100% organic cotton, a rib neck opening, a fully taped shoulder seam and a pre-shrunk finish, and says it is made in China. It describes a vintage-style tailored fit, cut close around the shoulders and chest, and calls the weight mid-weight. Sizes run XS to XXL, labelled 36 to 46, at $55 USD. Of the three other brands here, it is the only one that publishes a weight figure.

  5. 1ABEL Tee

Our catalog lists 220 gsm ringspun cotton, garment-dyed, Portugal manufacture and sizes XS, S, M, L, XL at $75 USD. Boxy through the chest with a dropped shoulder. Ribbed crew neck and side-seamed construction. These are our own declared specifications. The catalog record lists cotton with no modal, so it is a different fabric from the Marine Layer blend, and it does not establish that it fits or feels like the Signature Crew Tee. You cannot buy it today: it is open for waitlist interest only.

  6. Read the fabric line first. Marine Layer is the only model here that blends cotton with micromodal; the other four list cotton only. A blend and an all-cotton jersey are different fabrics, so treat a cotton tee as a different choice, not a copy. We have not worn or tested any of these T-shirts, so this page cannot tell you how the fabrics compare in the hand. The labels do tell you the composition and the care instructions, and those are worth reading side by side.

  7. Read the weights with their units. Taylor Stitch publishes 5-oz. and our catalog lists 220 GSM; the units differ and we have not converted them. Marine Layer says lightweight, Outerknown says light, and Faherty and Taylor Stitch say mid-weight, with no figure from the first three. Weight describes fabric mass per area. It does not tell you how a T-shirt will fit, feel or last.

  8. Compare fit with measurements. Lay a T-shirt you already like flat and note chest width, shoulder width, body length and sleeve length. Marine Layer names no fit but sells in-between sizes, Faherty says relaxed, Outerknown says classic, Taylor Stitch says tailored and our catalog says boxy: five different patterns. On the size chart shown with the Signature Crew Tee, Marge covers a 39 to 40 inch chest and Larger covers 42 to 43 inches.

Questions people ask

What brands are similar to Marine Layer?

This guide compares four: Faherty, Outerknown, Taylor Stitch and 1ABEL. The overlap is partial. All five named T-shirts are short-sleeve tees with no graphic described, but the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee is the only one in a cotton and micromodal blend; the other four list cotton only. Fit wording, published weight, country of manufacture and listed price differ from one model to the next.

Is Marine Layer a high-end brand?

Price is the only part of that question a product page can answer, and we do not grade brands. On 18 October 2026 the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee showed a $54 USD regular price. The Faherty, Outerknown and Taylor Stitch tees in this guide listed $68, $58 and $55 USD. Those are listings on one date, not a verdict on any label.

What is the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee made of?

The US page for the Signature Crew Tee in Pure White lists 50% Supima cotton and 50% micromodal and says the modal comes from recycled beech wood. Marine Layer calls this its signature fabric and says the tee is made in the USA. The page describes the tee as lightweight but does not publish a fabric weight figure.

Does the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee shrink?

The product page says it is pre-washed for softness but shrinks about 1 inch if you put it in the dryer, and gives the care as wash cold, dry low. That is Marine Layer's own statement for this model; we have not tested it.

What are Marine Layer Marge and Larger sizes?

They are in-between sizes. On the size chart shown with the Signature Crew Tee, Marge covers a 39 to 40 inch chest, between Medium and Large, and Larger covers a 42 to 43 inch chest, between Large and Extra Large. The tee is sold in Small, Medium, Marge, Large, Larger, Extra Large and 2XL.

Faherty vs Marine Layer: how do their tees differ?

On the two models checked here, the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee lists 50% Supima cotton and 50% micromodal, made in the USA, at a $54 USD regular price. The Faherty Sunwashed Regenerative Tee lists 100% regenerative organic cotton, a relaxed fit and a woven label at the left hem, at $68 USD, and does not say where it is made. Neither page publishes a fabric weight figure, so compare the measurements of the exact sizes.

Is there a Marine Layer dupe?

These are distinct products from different brands. None of the alternatives in this guide uses the Signature Crew Tee's cotton and micromodal blend, so none should be treated as a copy of it. Decide which detail you want to keep or change, such as the fabric, the cut or where it is made, then inspect the exact garment.

How does the 1ABEL Tee compare with the Marine Layer Signature Crew Tee?

On published specifications only: our catalog lists 220 gsm ringspun cotton, garment-dyed at $75 USD, made in Portugal. The Signature Crew Tee page lists 50% Supima cotton and 50% micromodal, made in the USA, at a $54 USD regular price, with no weight figure. They are different fabrics, and neither listing shows how a T-shirt feels, fits or lasts. The 1ABEL Tee is waitlist-only until Capsule 3 opens on 11.11.2027; joining the waitlist does not place an order.
